Maverick is Back and so is Porsche!

According to Hannah Elliott reporting in Bloomberg, in the 1986 version of “Top Gun,” Kelly McGillis’s character, “Charlie,” zoomed around San Diego in a black 1958 Porsche 356 was actually a replica of the real thing. It was built for the movie in Canada. Today, a 356 is now worth more than $200,000 when in the best condition.
But the hero car of 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” a ’73 911S, needed no such stand-in – it’s the real deal. In the new Navy movie “Top Gun: Maverick” Porsche again is a featured player driven by the beautiful Jennifer Connelly, who plays “Penny”.
Instead, the 1973 Porsche 911 S that Jennifer Connelly owns as “Penny” is a numbers-matching original car. So is another ’73 911 E in the movie that director Joseph Kosinski used on camera as a backup model. “Penny sails fast boats, so I liked the idea that she drove a vintage Porsche as well,” Kosinski said. “I think the 1973 911 S model is one of their most timeless designs.”
Connelly herself—not a stunt double—drove the factory-correct Silver Metallic 911 S coupe. It was lent to the film by San Diego resident Nick Psyllos. A longtime collector, Psyllos has owned more than 10 Porsches, including a 1972 911 ST tribute car in tangerine orange. Outfitted with classic “Fuchs” wheels, the high-performance 1973 “S” came from the factory with a 2.4-liter, 190-horsepower engine, and the then-novel “Type 915” transmission. With the exception of the top-of-the-line Porsche 911 Carrera RS, the 1973 911 S coupe stands alone at the apex of Porsche’s lightweight sports cars from the early ’70s.

HURRY Last Chance:
Spring 2022 Member Raffle is still on
Win a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS!
Each fall and spring, Porsche Club of America opens a member-only raffle, in which you, the member, may purchase entries for a chance to win a brand-new Porsche. For the Spring 2022 Member Only Raffle, the first grand prize is a 2022 718 Cayman GT4 RS plus $25,000, and subsequent grand prizes are a 718 Cayman S. Alternatively, winners may also choose $85,000 instead of a car plus $25,000. After 9,500 entries are sold, another grand prize will be added for every additional 4,500 entries sold. Raffle entries are $50 (USD) each. All entries received by June 1, 2022, will be accepted into the raffle. Winner(s) to be announced by July 31, 2022.
The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the sports car enthusiasts have been waiting for, mating the 911 GT3’s 4.0-liter flat-six to a seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. The GT4 RS makes 493 horsepower and laps the Nürburgring faster than the 991.2 GT3. The 718 Cayman S is no slouch either, with 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque that hits hard and low in the rev range.

Porsche announces dates and location for next Rennsport Reunion
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will host the world’s largest fan gathering in September 2023
The next Porsche Rennsport Reunion will be held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California, from September 28 to October 1 in 2023. This will be the seventh running of the Rennsport Reunion and marks the fourth time that the iconic California race circuit is the stage for a celebration of the motorsports heart of Porsche. Further information on themes and ticket sales will be announced in due course.
During the four-day event, fans of all ages will not only get to experience exciting racing action with vintage and contemporary Porsche race cars on track, but also be able to see many rare Porsche vehicles, enjoy new vehicle reveals, Esports, fan zones, and take part in opportunities to meet and interact with drivers as they share their exciting racing experiences. Rennsport Reunion will also offer a host of other off-track activities.
Conceived by racing great Brian Redman and Porsche Cars North America’s longstanding PR General Manager Bob Carlson in 2001, Rennsport was created to celebrate the racing heritage of Porsche. They envisioned an event at which drivers and enthusiasts could gather to celebrate racing and pay tribute to the people and cars that have helped build the Porsche legacy. Since its inaugural event at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut over 20 years ago, Rennsport has continuously grown in appeal, drawing in 80,000 fans over the course of the last event in 2018.
