TERROR AT SEA – IS IT DAVEY JONES’ LOCKER FOR PORSCHES?
The Felicity Ace, a huge cargo ship was burning at sea this week, abandoned but drifting with a very expensive and an extremely terrifying problem…its cargo is at risk – 1,100+ Porsches and VWs! According to The Washington Post, it might sink; the crew is safe but the Porsches, Volkswagens, and other brand-new cars left on board, which were set to be delivered to North America, might not be so lucky. Here’s what VW/Porsche had to say:
“Our immediate thoughts are of relief that the 22 crew of the merchant ship “Felicity Ace” are safe and well.
A number of our cars are among the cargo. We are in contact with the shipping company and the details of the cars on board are now known. Customers affected by the incident are being contacted by their dealer.
While it remains too early to confirm what occurred and next steps, we are—along with our colleagues at Porsche AG—supporting our customers and our dealers as best we can to find solutions. Anyone concerned by this incident and the implications on the car they’ve ordered should maintain in contact with dealer with which their order was placed.
We believe around 1,100 of our cars were among the estimated 2,500 vehicles on board the ship at the time of the incident.”
LET’S HOPE YOUR DEALER DOES NOT CONTACT YOU!
NEWS FLASH: We’ve been told all the Porsches were destined for East Coast dealers so we’re good here on the coast – for now.
SPRING 2022 MEMBER RAFFLE IS ON – WIN A PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN GT4 RS!
Each fall and spring, Porsche Club of America opens a member only raffle, in which you, the member, may purchase entries for a chance to win a brand-new Porsche. For the Spring 2022 Member Only Raffle, the first grand prize is a 2022 718 Cayman GT4 RS plus $25,000, and subsequent grand prizes are a 718 Cayman S. Alternatively, winners may also choose $85,000 instead of a car plus $25,000. After 9,500 entries are sold, another grand prize will be added for every additional 4,500 entries sold. Raffle entries are $50 (USD) each. All entries received by June 1, 2022 will be accepted into the raffle. Winner(s) to be announced by July 31, 2022.
The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the sports car enthusiasts have been waiting for, mating the 911 GT3’s 4.0-liter flat six to a seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. The GT4 RS makes 493 horsepower and laps the Nürburgring faster than the 991.2 GT3. The 718 Cayman S is no slouch either, with 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque that hits hard and low in the rev range.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE! THE NEW GT3 IS GREAT!
MotorTrend Magazine has selected the Porsche 911 GT3 as the Performance Vehicle of the Year. According to one of the editors, “Before I drove the 991.2 version, the 991.1 GT3 marked the first time in my career I had nothing negative to say about a vehicle.”But then after driving the new improved 2022 version their director of editorial operations said, “Holy hell, this thing is amazing!” In their list of “Pros” they noted:
- One of the world’s best engine and transmission combos
- Extraordinary handling
- Oh, the sound, the sound, the sound
The cons are there for sure, because they have to list something! Here they are:
- Some may find it overkill for street driving
- Ride quality not for everyone
- Good luck finding one for the sticker price!
PORSCHE PANAMERA HYBRIDS ARE HERE!
Porsche continues to expand its E-performance strategy with no fewer than three hybrid models in the Panamera range They provide semi-electric driving the Porsche way, offering the right combination of dynamics and efficiency for every taste.
No other manufacturer offers three different hybrid variants in a single model series. But Porsche goes two steps further with the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, the 4S E-Hybrid, and the Turbo S E-Hybrid: they also come in three body variants. In addition to the standard Panamera, the electrified models are also available as a Sport Turismo or as an Executive version with a longer wheelbase. Thanks to an update to a more modern cell chemistry, the storable energy content has been significantly increased while retaining the same battery size. The battery pack under the boot floor now has 17.9 kWh instead of the previous 14.1 kWh. This is enough for up to 64 kilometers of purely electric driving.
VIRTUAL ROADS ALA PORSCHE VIDEO!
Now you can rediscover the most beautiful roads in a Porsche over and over again without even getting in the car…at home!
Porsche is developing an innovative software solution called “Virtual Roads” in cooperation with Swiss start-up Way Ahead Technologies. The aim of the Virtual Roads project is to offer drivers the opportunity to quickly and easily choose their favorite routes from real life and transfer them into a video game. All you need is a smartphone with the right app.
Developing a new video game can take months, if not years. Porsche hopes to considerably accelerate this time-consuming process when Virtual Roads is ready to be launched. In the future, the innovation project will allow drivers to record any route using a specific app on their smartphone, which only needs to be set up behind the windshield. The data can then be transferred automatically to the virtual world thanks to software that converts the recordings of the road and surrounding area into a 3D environment. This process takes less than one per cent of the time required by a conventional digitalization process using lasers.
Here’s a video link to an explanation of how Porsche is moving Virtual Roads from the street to a video game:
