GGR AX5 2014–Autocross Report, Post-Parade
GGR’s autocross number 5 has come and gone, marking the halfway point of the season with a wonderful event on Alameda Island, also known as Harbor Bay Isle. Flanked by the international commerce Port of Oakland and what was once the Pan American Airways seaplane port, the original home base of the Famous China Clipper flying boat, the Golden Gate Region Porsche Club of America competitive autocross drivers duke it out under summer skies.
The event started with the early morning gathering of a handful of dedicated volunteers who divided up the morning tasks, manning the gates of the former naval air base, posting up at the registration table and setting up the course. As the flocks of Porsches converged on the autocross tarmac another set of volunteers took to the task of safety checks for vehicles registered to compete. After a brisk course walk and the requisite drivers meeting helmet-headed folks strapped into their cars and took to flogging the course.
Post-Parade blues beset some hardened autocross junkies but even the afflicted found their way out of the funk and soon the competitive spirit filled the air, adrift with the roar of the classic sounds of speed, thrills and Porsche passion. As always, fun was had by all and the next event is just around the corner so polish those wheels and hone those driving skills… there may be a trophy with your name on it.
