Rennsport 2018 at Laguna Seca and Other News
Capt. Mike (AKA) Capt. Michael Sherman, USN-Ret.
GGR Regional Summary
Rennsport Reunion VI at Laguna Seca – SEP 27-30 2018
Yes, here comes Rennsport back to Laguna Seca for the four-day “family reunion,” September 27 through 30, 2018. Yeah, I still call it that since the sponsorship seems to wiggle back and forth. It was last held at the famed Monterey Peninsula racetrack in 2015 and drew nearly 60,000 visitors. If you don’t have inn/hotel reservations by now…buy a tent!
Hosted by PCNA, Rennsport Reunion VI will again feature the widest variety of historic racing Porsche competition models in the company’s 70-year history. The first Rennsport Reunion was held in 2001 at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, followed by the second and third at Daytona International Speedway in 2004 and 2007. The fourth and fifth Rennsports took place at Laguna Seca in 2011 and 2015, both of which attracted 40,000+ spectators.
As in the past five reunions, cars will be grouped by the period in which they raced so that enthusiasts can focus on the different motorsports eras. Fans will have full access to both the paddock and trackside locations to see and hear everything from early 356 sports cars to the latest Le Mans winning 919 LMP1 Hybrid.
Enthusiasts interested in registering their Porsche race cars for competition at Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI have until April 1, 2018 to apply at www.mazdaraceway.com. A selection committee will verify proper livery, mechanical correctness and historical race provenance. Ticket packages, along with options for camping and hospitality are available online or by calling 831-242-8200.
USA at Le Mans
Porsche will field 10 Porsche 911 RSRs in this year’s running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the USA will play heavily in that mix. Four of the ten have direct connections to teams and drivers based in the United States. The overall tally includes four factory cars in the LMGTE-Pro class and six in the LMGTE-Am class for the June 16 – 17 event. The US-based IMSA teams are well represented on the Le Mans entry list, which was made public on February 9. In the Pro category, for the first time, will be two all-Porsche factory drivers in cars fielded under the Porsche GT Team banner by CORE autosport.
ZAP! Here Comes the ElectroPorsche
Porsche will invest more than six billion euros in e-mobility, focusing on both plug-in hybrids and purely electric vehicles by 2022. But our tail-wagging smokers are going to be ok – for now. “We are doubling our expenditure on electromobility from around three billion euros to more than six billion euros,” according to Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Alongside development of our models with combustion engines, we are setting an important course for the future with this decision.” The plans have been bolstered significantly to include around three billion euros of investment in material assets and slightly more than three billion euros in development costs.
Thinking of a Porsche – Tell a Friend!
Did you know that if you have a friend thinking about owning a Porsche, they can get some of the benefits of being a member by joining the Porsche Club of America’s prospective owner’s program, called PCA Test Drive ?Benefits of the program include a six-month subscription to Porsche Panorama, access to The Mart classifieds and Tech Q&A. There’s even an added perk – access to Test Drive News, a monthly email newsletter offering guidance to those looking to purchase a Porsche. Tell them to try it…it works!
Porsche Design Store LA
If you’ve been to LAX, you know there’s a Porsche Design store in the terminal, and now they’ve opened a new 1,600 square foot retail space at the renowned South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California (more than 21 million visitors a year). It carries Porsche Design merchandise, has a regularly rotating vehicle display, and houses a 16-foot by 9-foot high-definition video wall. SCP, as it’s known, has 250 boutiques and 30 restaurants. The Porsche Design associates will be able to provide basic information on Porsche vehicles to potential customers using tablets and the in-store display vehicle. No cars will be offered for sale or demonstrated at the Porsche Design store; they will continue to be offered and sold only through PCNA’s network of 189 authorized Porsche dealers.

GGR Keeps Growing! Over 3300!!!
NOW – REFER A FRIEND
You may note that we’ve now hit +3300 members. That’s a tribute to us all as membership is a job for everyone. That’s why last year I emailed copies of our “leave behind” card for all members to reprint and distribute (see below). If you don’t like leaving them in windshields, then feel free to hand them to Porsche drivers whenever you can.
And if you have friends who might be interested, go to the PCA website and the “Refer a Friend” feature. It’s an excellent way to invite and introduce prospective members to the Porsche Club of America. It is an easy and quick way to follow up after making a personal contact. See the steps below. The great thing about this feature is that ANY member can use it. So, give it a try.
1. Log in to your account.
2. From the Menu Bar, click Membership, Refer a Friend.
3. Under “Refer Friends” enter the email addresses of friends you would like to refer. Separate each email address by a comma.
4. Under “Message” an automatic message will appear. Feel free to make changes. In fact, I would encourage you to personalize your message and direct them not only to the PCA website, but the Membership Benefits page as well (https://www.pca.org/membership-benefits). Whatever message is in the box will be sent to each friend you listed.
I’ve restocked the cupboard with all new reprints of our placard that feature our new numbers (3200+) and I know you’ll want to hand these out! These are available at every GGR function and we’d like you to pick some up and feel free to use them whenever you see an unaffiliated Porsche sitting idle. I stick them on windshields of Porsches or hand them to drivers if they don’t have our logo in the window. No one is safe from the devious membership director! Porsche owners in Half Moon Bay now run when they see me coming! If you want, I’ll even mail some to you so you can hand them out…let me know and I’ll get them to you!
Badges – I still got em!
I still have a HUUUGE back-log of badges created from event “no shows.” Please make sure to ask for yours at the next event you attend, we’ll have them set out. Member badges are provided free to all those new members/affiliates who RSVP and attend social and/or driving events for the first time. Otherwise, member badges are available for a small fee through Spotlight Impressions in San Mateo. The badges feature the GGR logo, your name and a convenient magnetic clasp. The cost is $12.00 for the badge plus shipping. So, it behooves you to get them from us during an event. Otherwise, to order your badges fill out the form on our website at www.pca-ggr.org/membership/badges and email back to Spotlight Impressions at firstname.lastname@example.org. Make sure to wear your badge to all functions to help interact with 0ther members!
Logo Winter Wear
We’ve got a great selection at the GGR- PCA online Webstore with both men and women’s hoodies, sweatshirts, etc. The site features a whole line of wearable GGR plunder. It’s located at www.pcawebstore.com; look for us in the regional section, create an account, and get shopping. If you have a recommendation for some other item, let us know.
Remember to check the calendar for upcoming events. See you at the AX, Track, Fun Run or next social function, e.g., Boxster Brunch?
