November, 2020 Track Report

Happy Holidays!

Drivers –

Still grateful for the opportunity to host an abbreviated 2020 track season, your track team is encouraged by the opportunities that lie before us for 2021.

But before we zoom ahead, let us acknowledge this year’s PCA Club Racing Champions!

  • •  GT3:  Alex Steele (West Coast Series and National Champ)
  • •  Spec 911:  Bob Murillo (National Champ, 2nd West Coast Series)
  • •  Spec 911:  Andy Simpkinson (West Coast Series Champ, 2nd National)
  • •  Spec 944:  Greg Chiocco (West Coast Series Champ, 2nd National)
  • •  Spec Boxster:  Heath Spencer (West Coast Series and National Champ)

One aspect of the 2020 GGR track series which was tough to accept was our inability to accommodate student drivers (or to provide continuing instruction to certified drivers).  Much discussion floated through various conversations about “lead-follow” instruction, but through the course of the 2020 season, lead-follow was not allowed by PCA.  However!  PCA has adopted a particular methodology to implement lead-follow instruction.  Details are being finalized, but know that your Chief Driving Instructor, Scott Kalkin, along with GGR instructors Bill Phillips, John Seidell, Fred Stout, Todd Welty, Howard Yao, and your track chair worked with Diablo Region CDI’s Tom Davenport and David Ogiba over a full day of on-track testing and compiling of the collective instructing experience to determine a very effective way in which we will implement lead-follow instruction in 2021. Once a skeptic, your track chair is now a believer!  It’s going to be great!

Our 2021 track season is shaping up along these lines:

  • •  April 2-3-4:  Thunderhill Raceway DE and Club Race (3 mile)
  • •  May 22-23:  Buttonwillow Raceway DE and Club Race (CCCR will host its DE on Friday, May 21)
  • •  July 3-4:  Sonoma Raceway DE and Club Race (the first GGR hosted weekend at Sonoma since 2008)
  • •  August 28-29:  Sonoma Raceway Club Race only (with NASA)
  • •  July 3-4:  Sonoma Raceway DE and Club Race (the first GGR hosted weekend at Sonoma since 2008)
  • •  September 25-26:  Thunderhill DE and Club Race (3 mile) (Diablo Region will host its DE on Friday, September 24)
  • •  October 9-10:  Sonoma Raceway Club Race only (with NASA)

Yes, there is no Laguna weekend for GGR as of this writing.  However, to get your “PCA Laguna” fix, our friends at Diablo Region will be hosting a one-day DE at Laguna on Friday, March 19, and our friends at Central Coast Region will be at Laguna on Monday, October 18.

Be sure to put “new helmet” on your Holiday Wish List, as the Snell 2010 helmets will expire on December 31.  (2015 helmets are good for another 5 years.)  Snell 2020 helmets are now available at your favorite racer supply stores.

Stay tuned to GGR emails, the Nugget, and Facebook for 2021 track season updates!
