I would first of all like to express our sympathy and empathy for all the Hurricane Sandy victims on the East Coast. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Volunteer Appreciation Day is Saturday, December 8th at 5 pm at Chef Chu's.

This year we return to Chef Chu's in Los Altos to say thank you to all the volunteers who have helped up by pitching in over this past year. As much as we appreciate the members who participate in events, we appreciate the volunteers who work hard to put them on even more! Chef Chu outside

Chef will be preparing a very special banquet for us, with gourmet red and white wines selected by the Wall Street  Journal Wine Club included. We'll be upstairs in the semi-private dining room. Should be another great event!

This event is INVITATION ONLY and we'll have a list of invitees at the door. An email has gone out to the club directors and event chairs asking them to submit their list of volunteers. We'll follow up in about a week with an email invitation to the deserving folks.

If you don't receive an email by Thanksgiving, contact the director or event chair you've been pitching in to help out and remind them!

Olen Gets His Award

Last month we announced the creation of the Olen Creech award for extraordinary service to the club over a period of years, and that we had been unsuccessful in luring Olen to an event to present it! To recap: Olen every year does GGR's federal and state tax returns, producing mind-numbing 60-page documents in the process--at no charge to the club. Thanks to Larry and Linda Adams for tracking Olen down, and to Shirley Neidel for sending in these photos.

Congratulations Olen! Very much deserved!

Following receipt of his reward, Larry relates that Olen said "Well, I was thinking of quitting, but I guess I'll stick around now."     ;)

Thank goodness! Tax season is coming up!

Thanksgiving (almost) at Laguna Seca

If you're wondering what to do on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving so you don't have to go in to work, look no further. You can join us at Laguna Seca for two days of driving on this world famous track. We'll have the track all to ourselves, so for once you can be on the course instead of trudging through the dirt around it. Here's the link to register.

Don't procrastinate! This event may already be sold out!

Save the Date: Saturday, January 12, 2013

This will be the date for the next GGR Awards Banquet. It will be a big whoop-de-doo, running from 5 to 10 pm. More details will be announced as they develop. This is one you won't want to miss!

Maybe we can get Olen to this one if we promise NOT to give him an award!

Till next month...

Self-Service on Email Addresses, Please!

Every month I get a few or sometimes many emails from readers about updating their email addresses. First, thanks for wanting to stay in touch! Second, there is no staff here! There's only CoCo and I doing this each month, and there are over 3,000 folks subscribing to The Nugget.

Accordingly, to send The Nugget to any email address you like or to unsubscribe, just go to the bottom of any issue of The Nugget. There's one option at the bottom that says:

And another that says:

These should be able to take care of you.

My apologies at the folks who get irritated with their change requests via reply emails not getting handled. I would cuss out the staff--but I don't have any!

Thanks for reading.

So many choices...aren't you glad you chose the right one? Have you noticed the huge number of models that are now on the road? Not just the makes, but also the models that they offer under one marque or another - confusion reigns. For instance, Toyota offers six cars and minivans, seven hybrids and EVs, seven crossovers and SUVs, and six trucks. KIA has eight cars, Hyundai, the other Korean company offers 11 cars and three crossovers - and at their high end, they out-Beemer the Beemer in looks. Across the pond, FIAT, which has seen a resurgence here in the US (they even rebranded with a new logo and Charlie Sheen), now incorporates Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep (!), with 22+ cars and SUVs. Here in the US, our automakers are churning out auto, after hybrid, after truck, after SUV. But my point is, and I do have one, they all look alike! Even the Aston Martins and the Jag XKs are hard to tell apart - same designer I'm told. Gimme a break! But one car company has six highly recognizable models (with a few variations) and there's no way you won't recognize a Porsche, whether it's a 911, Boxster, Cayenne, Panamera, Cayman, or the newest - the Macan - a mini-Cayenne. They are distinctive, they are aesthetic, they exude quality, and they are the gauges against which all others are measured - read the magazines. So sit up a little straighter, smile as you go by that Yaris or Panda or Fiat 500, and grin - just a bit - then punch it! Drive safely, my friends. Capt. Mike

Director's Reports

President - John was able to arrange a time and provide Olen Creech with the Olen Creech Award. The Olen Creech Award was fully reviewed in last month's Nugget. A quick explanation is inserted into these minutes.

The Olen Creech Award is given to the member(s) who have made outstanding contributions to the club over a period of years above and beyond the already extraordinary contributions other member put in. It is named in honor of Olen Creech, the first recipient who for many years has prepared GGR's tax returns. It is expected that this award shall rarely be awarded and only for outstanding service over many years as exemplified by Olen Creech.

Secretary - Richard provided a report on the Election for 6 board positions to commence in January 2013. A total of 164 ballots were cast.

DentPro Day 2012

Saturday, November 3

Our annual DentPro Day will be held on Saturday, November 3d.  It will be held at the new DentPro facility at 1436 White Oaks Rd, Unit 5, Campbell, CA. http://www.mapquest.com/?version=1.0&hk=3-4Vvs0LwK

Here's your chance to get that ding out, small or large!  Or get some minor paint done!  Or have the plastic covers on your headlights polished out!  Or just hang out with other car-guys/gals.

This will be the 19th (maybe 20th) year that I've coordinated this event using this same DentPro business.  To say the least, these guys are pros.  I've seen them massage out dings/dents that I would swear were beyond repair.

For those unfamiliar with DentPro, they provide an excellent alternative to body repair shops.  Taken to a regular body shop, a door ding can be an expensive proposition requiring not only the body repair, but also a likely repaint of the damaged panel.  We're talking hundreds of dollars here.  With DentPro, through the artistry of getting behind the dent/ding, they massage it out.

Pricing for the DentPro service will be as last year's.  It will be $40 for 1" dents; $80 for 2" dents, and $120 for 3" ones.  In most cases, no repaint is needed.  In each case, DentPro will examine your car, point out any blemishes that you may have missed (and I guarantee there will be some), and provide you an estimate before beginning work.  You may opt out at that point.

To start the day, DentPro will provide bagels and smears, donuts, and coffee.  They will also have drinks for us to soothe our throats as we bench-race and tell lies about our cars.  At noon, a tasty lunch will be provided.

Beginning at 9 AM, we will schedule in 3-4 cars per hour, ending at 2 PM.  If you need a later time, DentPro may be able to accommodate you depending on how many sign up, that is, they may be working on cars beyond 2 PM.  If you need an earlier time, that may also be possible, but for now, 9 AM is the start time.  You are welcome to come early and leave late, just hang out to see all the cars passing through.

Please RSVP to me at jmramos@gmail.com, giving an idea of how much work needs to be done on your car (number/size of dents and location), and a requested time.  If the time requested is filled,  I'll provide alternative times.  BTW, any and all cars are welcome, but priority will be given to PCA-GGR members.

Hope to see you there!

Joe
