Starting Year 51

We launched GGR's 51st year in fine fashion with a board meeting in January, followed by our annual Awards Banquet a week later. You can check out photos and coverage elsewhere in this month's Nugget.

Looking forward, we've got another great year ahead of us. Autocross chairs Chris Hamilton and Joe Lee have been hard at work nailing down the dates and have a full schedule of ten events plus the one-day Porboys' Beginners Autocross School.

If you've been considering seeing what your car can REALLY do in a completely safe environment, the Beginners Autocross School is a great way to start out. You'll be gradually introduced to car handling by our very experienced instructors and end the day with driving on an actual autocross course. Watch for the announcement on this as it always sells out early.

As another alternative, all first-time drivers (any anyone who wants one!) are assigned instructors at each and every autocross. Here's the full schedule for the year:

Meeting Minutes for January 9, 2011


Call to Order

President Celona called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. at his home.

 

All members of the 2011 Board, save the late-arriving Secretary, were present. The Board was joined by Sharon Neidel (Zone 7 Representative), GGR's Autocross Chairs and Larry Adams as well as 2010 Board Members, Rob Murillo and Mark Powell.

 

            Agenda Changes - None

            Calendar Changes - None

           

Postmortem of Past Events

            The joint board meeting at Chef Chu's restaurant was a big success.

 

Directors' Reports

            President -. Expanding the joint board meeting in to include club volunteers was a good idea which should be repeated in the future

 

            Vice President - Insurance has been ordered for upcoming autocrosses and the end-of-the-year banquet.

 

            Treasurer - The Treasurer's report was delivered and accepted. The Treasurer presented the competition budgets for 2011. These were discussed and approved. Other budgets received by the Treasurer were also discussed and approved.

 

            Secretary - Nothing to report once the November and December Board Meeting minutes were presented and approved.

 

            Social - The 2010 Social Director, Mark Powell, reported on the upcoming end-of-the-year banquet to be held at Blackhawk. Pete Stout, EXCELLENCE's Editor, will be the speaker. The 2011 Social Director expressed her thanks to Mark for his help in smoothing her entry into this job. She listed a number of events ranging from a LeMans 24 hour party to wine country tours that she is exploring.

 

            Membership - A list of new members was presented and approved.

 

            Competition - The Competition Director received a request to revise the PAX factors. It was agreed that GGR'sr most pressing competition issues involve getting our driving events up and running. The published rule-changing process is the best way to modify the PAX factors.

 

            Webmaster - The website aliases are being reconfigured. Board members were reminded to reply to the Webmaster's e-mail regarding this. GGR now has a Facebook page.

 

Topics for Discussion

 

            Zone Report - National is moving forward with its new building. National is working out the process to elect a replacement for Tim Fleming on the Board.

            Scheduling - Historically GGR held a meeting to fill out a calendar for the coming year. Recently, it has been difficult to get firm dates for driving events. All agreed that we need to get the driving event dates onto the calendar as soon as they become available.

            Sponsorship - The President reported the good news that Clemson Chan has agreed to serve as the point person for sponsorship activities. It was agreed that Clemson should report to the Treasurer. The Board expressed its appreciation of our sponsors' support.

 

Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p. m.

Hey everyone, Happy New Year!  It's a new year and I'm sure you know what that means?  It means that we are just around the corner from another season of Autocrossing and big track events!  The first event is just about 6 weeks away, an Autocross on Saturday March 15th at the fantastic Alameda location.  That will be followed up in April with another Autocross and our first track event of the season.  The track event will be held at Thunderhill and will feature Driver Education (DE) a Time Trial (TT) and a club race.  That is right, club racing is coming back to Northern California-you really don't want to miss it!

 

I will use this forum to thank a few people who selflessly give time and energy to make all this come together.  To start, heartfelt thanks go out to Mike Cullinan and Warren Walker for their dedication to the DE/TT/ClubRace series for the last two years.  Their hard work has kept the series moving forward during some tough times.  Taking over the reins from Mike and Warren is Carl Switzer.  On the Autocross side we welcome back Joe Lee and Chris Hamilton as co-chairs for their second season.  They worked hard to secure the Alameda site again this year and are proud to report that our use permit has been extended so we are set!  Last I would like to thank the outgoing Competition Director, Claude Leglise.  Claude worked tirelessly over the last year to keep the program on track and has been very helpful in bringing me up to speed.

 

Let me close with a big thank you to all involved and remind you to get your car, and yourself, ready for a GREAT 2011!  See you at an event soon.

As the Porsche Club of America says...  It's not just the cars, it's the people.  I joined the Club because of the cars, but I volunteered to be the Social Director because of the people.

 

I've already had a fantastic time at events, getting to know members and their cars and I haven't even been to all of the regular events yet.  I certainly plan on changing that soon and I hope that you'll join me!

 

The Boxster Brunches at Alice's Restaurant in gorgeous Woodside, put on by George & Carol Grialou, draw a nice crowd of Porsche owners, not just Boxsters, as all Porsches are welcome.  To work off brunch, the group will often tour the nearby mountain roads afterwards.

 

Friday Night Socials are organized by Shirley Neidel to meet at Harry's Hofbrau in Redwood City the third Friday night of every month.  No reservations are required, so just stop on by!

 

Of course, among our most popular events are the Autocross Series & the Club Races.  I was excited to hear that we'll have continued use of the Alameda Naval Base for Autocross, which provides plenty of space and a stunning backdrop for all of the action.  And with Joe Lee, Chris Hamilton, Carl Switzer and John Tavernetti running these events, fun will be had by all!

 

In addition to the longstanding events, which outgoing Social Director, Mark Powell, has so graciously continued to help with, I am organizing several new ones as well.  First, I'd like to have a New Member Mixer, inviting new & not so new members out for drinks to get acquainted.  I look forward to meeting so many more members and hearing directly from you the kind of events you'd like to come to, or help put on.  We have several cool spaces offered to us and I look forward to maximizing the resources offered to us by our many Porsche loving friends.  

 

The event I'm most excited about is the 24 Hour of Le Mans Viewing Party that I've been dreaming of for ages.  Mark your calendars for the 11th & 12th of June, because we'll be there cheering on our favorite cars and drivers from start to finnish.  As well, I hope to do smaller American Le Mans Viewing Parties and maybe even see if we can catch a Flying Lizard or two.  


As great as all the parties are, I'm hoping to find a way for us, as fortunate as we are, to give back in some sort of meaningful way.  Whether it's through a blood drive, or a fundraiser benefitting children or animals, let's do something.  Please let me know what your thoughts are and what you'd like to participate in, because again, it's all about the people and who shows up for the events!

The Boxster: Power Meals on Wheals

 
You know you're a good cook when people ask you to bring food along to family gatherings--even more so if they make specific requests. After the first time I brought my Orange-Ginger-Cinnamon Hickory-Smoked Turkey to Thanksgiving (featured last month), it has been requested every year since then. I don't always have time to make it but, I know that if I do, there won't be much to bring home!

The question then: is how to transport the various things I'm asked to bring along? Certainly a standard car trunk would hold things. But, suppose you've got a hot turkey that just came out of the oven, cold salads, maybe some fresh flowers, and a fragile dessert to go along with it? You'd like an ideal environment (temperature and protection-wise) for each one of these.

Turns out the most ideal vehicle I've found for this short of a catering truck is your standard Boxster. It is so perfect I have a hard time believing Porsche didn't design the vehicle with this in mind.

Start with the back trunk. There's just enough insulation between it and the engine that it gets comfortably warm without getting flat-out hot. Plus the space is compact enough to hold warm pots without them sliding around much. For this past Thanksgiving, I got the turkey, gravy, and a big pot of soup in and all stayed nice and warm on the 45-minute drive to where I was going. Here's what it all looked like packed up:

Note that the pots with liquids have an extra piece of foil crimped on with the lid to make sure nothing spills. Just in case we're headed for another concours one day!

In fact, the turkey (in the roaster on the right) was still so hot an hour later it had to set out and cool before it could be carved.

Got to love that German engineering.

And the cold stuff, including fresh flowers? Well, that's what the front trunk is for! It's tall enough that even flowers on long stems fit in there just fine. 
Plus all your salads, table decorations, etc., will sit in there very happily. Here's what the front trunk looked like loaded up:

All that heat from the radiators in the nose has plenty of air to prevent the slightest bit of warmth from penetrating into the front trunk. On a cool day, it's almost like a big cooler equipped with a spare tire.

But, you ask, what about dessert? Here's where the Boxster is totally over the top: it comes equipped with a pie shelf! I imagine it would work for strudel, too.

Thoughtfully, Porsche included a bar I could tether the shallow box holding the pies to so they would stay put in brisk maneuvers.

All in all, the Boxster is absolutely the perfect catering vehicle. I'm surprised more restaurants don't use them for deliveries.

I haven't tried out a Cayman to see if they're comparable, but, with the entire back open to the cockpit, I don't imagine it gets toasty warm back there like in a Boxster trunk. As for Cayennes and Panameras, well, you're back to just a trunk.

If, like me, you're often cooking and transporting food, you just have to buy a Boxster if you don't already have one. It's worth it just for this!

Sweet Potato Pecan Pie
 

Since you're probably hankering for a slice just like I am, here's my recipe for those pies. There's just sweet and rich enough to make a yummy dessert without blowing out your calorie count.

The Gist

The crust is a butter, sugar, egg, salt flour pastry. The filling is roasted yams, brown sugar, corn syrup, eggs, cream, butter, vanilla, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. A sugar, corn syrup, egg, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and pecan mixture is poured on top of the filling for baking. And, yes, pastries are next to impossible to make from just a short summary like this! But you get the idea.

 

Ingredients

Pastry Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat pastry flour

4 tbs. sugar

1/2 tsp. salt

6 tbs. butter

1 egg

4 tbs. milk

 

Filling Ingredients

6 sweet potatoes or garnet yams

2 tbs. butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg

2 tbs. milk

2 tbs. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. allspice

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

 

Topping Ingredients

1-1/2 cups sugar

1-1/2 cups dark corn syrup

4 eggs

3 tbs. melted butter

4 tsp. vanilla extract

1/8 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. cinnamon

1-1/2 cups pecans

 

Method

First off, start an oven or toaster oven preheating to 325˚F. While the oven is heating, wash the yams and cut off any bad spots. Place the yams on a baking sheet (maybe lined with aluminum foil) and place them in the oven to bake. Bake the yams until they are very soft and the juice has started to ooze out of them and form little pools of caramelized syrup. This process will take an hour or more, depending on how large the yams are.

 

To make the pastry crust, combine the flour, sugar and salt in a food processor and whiz together until thoroughly mixed (about 10-15 seconds). Cut the butter into tablespoon sized pats and distribute over the top of the flour mixture. Process together until the butter is completely distributed through the flour and the mixture starts to look flaky (about 30-40 seconds).

 

Beat together the egg and milk. While the blender is running, pour this mixture slowly into the pour spout. By the time you've added it all, the dough should be starting to form chunks. Do not over process or the crust will be tough. This whole process should take 20-30 seconds. If your flour is very dry, you may need to add a few more drops of milk to get the dough to come together.

 

Rub the insides of a 12-inch spring form pan (or high-sided tart pan) with some more butter. Dump the dough mixture from the food processor container into the pan and use your fingers to press the dough onto the bottoms and sides to make a roughly even-thickness crust. Precision is not critical.

 

If the yams are done, proceed to make the filling. Otherwise, skip ahead to make the topping, then circle back for the filling.

 

To make the filling, mash the yams together with the butter and brown sugar. The yams should still be warm enough to melt the butter. If not, melt the butter in the microwave, then mash it in. Beat the remaining ingredients together, then whip into the yam-butter-sugar mixture with a hand mixer. It all should be very thoroughly mixed. Snack on the pieces of yam peel which got caught on the mixer blades (yummy!).

 

Spoon enough of the filling into the crust to fill it about 2/3 of the way up. If you have any extra, place it in a separate baking dish to cook separately.

 

To make the topping, beat together all the ingredients except the pecans until thoroughly mixed and all the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the pecans with a mixing spoon.

 

Spoon enough of the topping over the filling to come within about 1/4-inch of the top. If you have extra filling in a separate dish, be sure to spoon some over that, too.

 

Bake the pie in a preheated 325˚F oven until the pie is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. This will take about 2 hours for the big pie and less for the extra filling, if any. Let cool before serving, and serve at room temperature with either vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. The recipe for whipped cream follows.


Notes
This pie takes some to make, but is well worth the trouble. I've given pies to people in the neighborhood and run into issues about how much is not left before the other spouse gets home! I make them large to minimize contention.

The recipe calls for whole wheat pastry flour. New varieties of whole wheat white flour work just as well. Standard whole wheat bread flour is a little too hearty for use in pastries. If you're going to do it, you might as well do it right. You still get a lot of fiber and nutrition from the yams.

Variations

This recipe is also very good with using cooked pumpkin (either canned or fresh) instead of the yams. It might need a touch more sugar because the pumpkin is not as sweet as the yams.

Blackhawk Awards Banquet Celebrate the Accomplishments of a "Golden Year"

An Awards Banquet for "car guys and gals" in true GGR fashion, featuring a sumptuous luncheon buffet of Salmon, carved Prime Rib, and decadent Rum soaked cake, (and a special Kid friendly Menu of Nuggets and Ice Cream Sundaes), no host bar, and our very own "Vanna White," new Social Director Kimberly Tinawi was held at Blackhawk on Sunday, January 16.

 

Mark Powell organized a first- class awards celebration which featured Guest Speaker Pete Stout, editor of EXCELLENCE Magazine who incorporated a fascinating slide show with his personal anecdotes. Special thanks to Bill Benz for picking up the projector in Palo Alto just in the nick of time. Pete is passionate about Porsches and clearly relishes in sharing his breadth and depth of knowledge, expertise, skill, experience and pure JOY in driving Porsches. His life exemplifies the 50th anniversary logo...driving the World Porsche!

 

President John Celona decked in his aviator ray bans and black leather jacket to the music of Steppenwolf called the festivities to order with his usual quick wit, humor and style and kept the event moving at a brisk pace while acknowledging all the accomplishments of GGR this past year and the many volunteers who contributed their energy and enthusiasm.

 

He noted the stunning feature article on the Golden Anniversary weekend in the November 2010 issue PANORAMA acknowledging GGR as " one of PCA's finest regions."

 

One-of-a-kind model Porsches (on loan from Rector Porsche) served as the unique Centerpieces dotted with white and gold Spider Mums on stark black table linens designed and created on the spot by Kimberly Tinawi with ample assistance from her MOM !

 

Linda Adams, Treasurer, set up and managed the Registration Table. Donations were taken for Tim Fleming's Memorial Fund.

 

Carlsen Porsche provided all the prizes for the Raffle at a substantial discount which culminated the afternoon festivities. Thank you, Larry Adams for organizing and directing the Raffle and Linda, for the meticulous job of wrapping all the prizes.

GGR Historian Ralf Dossman was acknowledged for his tireless efforts in making the online Nugget Archive a reality. His entire family, wife and beautiful children were all smiles as they watched him collect his Trophy and magnificent engraved Obelisk as the DON MATTHEWS recipient.

 

Hamilton Racing won FAMILY of the Year for both its traditional family and non-traditional family who come together to share in the love of GGR. Son Chris accepted the award on behalf of the entire family.

 

Andrew Forrest took ENTHUSIAST of the Year for his boundless service, energy and technical support of GGR's 50th Anniversary event. It was great to see Andrew at all the events of the 50th weekend including the formal Presidents' Dinner at The City Club and family friendly historic Nimitz Mansion. We chatted in the vestibule, sampled delectable scallops on asian spoons, and I was told of memorable GGR anecdotes, some on display in the beautifully bound Scrapbooks in the Library of Nimitz Mansion.

 

Claude Leglise received the PERC BLISS Award for his contributions to the Track Series this year in wake of all the challenges that GGR faces for the future.

 

William Benz received a Special Honorary LIFETIME Membership Award in honor of his exemplary service to GGR. He noted that he was "speechless!"

Our goal was always to capture the spirit of GGR, to honor and respect its long tradition, to champion a new future for Porsche enthusiasts everywhere and to unite and to celebrate in the present the amazing people and diversity which make up the club for its GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY, a truly once-in-a-lifetime moment. 2010 was indeed a year of making memories, happy times, and new good friends.

Eavesdrop on any good bench racing session, and odds are the conversation will soon turn to car modifications to improve track performance. The general rule for racers is to add horsepower and lightness; everything else is bling. Yet for track day participants with a modern Porsche car, things are simpler because the performance straight "out of the box" is so high that adding horsepower is not the first thing to do. Further, maintaining drivability is an important factor because so many of our cars serve double duty as weekday driver and weekend track car.  

 

This series of columns is written with Drivers Education participants in mind. Each article will cover a performance improvement idea, and I will try to give you a sense of cost, as well as potential impact on street drivability. If you drive your car to the track, this column is for you. If you are already racing, you probably learned these tricks a long time ago.

High Performance Brake Fluid

 

Problem:

Brakes use friction between the brake pads and the rotors to convert kinetic energy into heat and therefore slow down the car. We rarely think about it, but this brings up the question of "Where does the heat go?" Some of it is exchanged with the ambient air (drilled or slotted rotors help), some of it transfers to the wheels and the suspension bits through metal, and some of it heats up the brake fluid. A serious problem arises when the brake fluid gets too hot and literally boils. Bubbles of gas appear in the brake lines, and since gas is compressible, braking power disappears. This rarely happens on the street, but it is fairly common on a race track, because we use the brakes so much more aggressively and for extended periods of time.  

 

I once was testing a 996 Turbo at Laguna Seca. After 5 laps I was feeling pretty confident, and I crested Turn 1 "pedal to the metal" and planned for late braking before Turn 2. Imagine my surprise when the brake pedal went straight to the floor! The brake fluid had overheated. I can attest that the gravel at the bottom of the hill is deep and quite effective, but I do not wish to repeat the experience.  

 

Solution:

You can prevent this problem simply by using a high performance brake fluid, which has a higher boiling point than standard fluids.

 

The industry measures the boiling temperature in two different states, "dry" when the fluid is pure, and "wet" when it contains 3.7% moisture. The reason for this is that over time the fluid attracts and absorbs water. This explains why we need to flush the system and replace the brake fluid every 2 to 3 years, more often if we do a lot of track days. Here is the comparison between various fluids:

I have had good success with ATE Super Blue and Motul, and there are plenty of other brands available that probably do as good of a job. Ask your Porsche dealer or mechanic for a recommendation.  

 

Cost:

A quart of the stuff costs between $12 and $18, so it is a very cheap upgrade. If you are confident you can change the fluid yourself, it will take about an hour. If you are not sure, ask your mechanic to do this, he will have the proper equipment. (These are the brakes after all.)

 

Streetability:

High performance brake fluid does not impact the ability to use your car on the street. In fact, if you live in a mountain area with a lot of downhills, it may even be safer. Some states may have restrictions on their use however. For instance, Florida does not allow blue color fluid. Check your local listings.  

 

Conclusion:

Upgrading your brake fluid is the first modification I recommend to improve the performance of your Porsche on the track. It is inexpensive, compatible with street driving, and it adds a great deal of peace of mind when pushing closer to the limit.

It's really raining.  That means that cars lacking either tire tread or tops get to stay in the garage.  Good for the cars but bad for generating material for a driving-oriented NUGGET article.

 

But wait - what's that?  A big pile of car magazines next to our bed and another (admittedly smaller) pile in the bathroom waiting to cascade into the tub.  These are but a tiny fraction of the Benz collection. (Expert's comment "Many condition issues and serious lack of organization but  does span over 50 years of ROAD & TRACK , lots of EXCELLENCE, PANORAMA , NUGGET  and 356 REGISTRY  plus an eclectic addition of random bits and pieces.)  The magazine piles are also drawn from the Sam Thornton collection. (Expert's comment:  Long believed to have been discarded by Mr. Thornton into the Palo Alto dump at the urging of Mrs. Thornton, this multi-box treasure trove of duplicate ROAD & TRACKs, PANOs and NUGGETs was instead abandoned by Mr. Thornton on the Benz front porch from whence it found this new home.)  

 

Re-reading handfuls of out-of-date car magazines is a worthwhile endeavor.  They were, in their day, the closest thing to a real-time record of events. I could dig out the 1957  ROAD & TRACK which  chronicled  the 1957 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. I don't need it.  I've read it so many times that I remember the tale like I was still 14 years old.   Juan Manuel Fangio had suffered a tire puncture in this Maserati and lost his lead to Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins in Ferraris.  Fangio's day was done and was standing alongside his car having a drink while the wheel was being changed to push the car to the garage.   He exchanged a few quiet words with his trusted mechanic, Bertocchi, got in the car and, to everyone's surprise, headed back out -  down by minutes.  A few laps -  nothing.   The confident Ferrari's slowed to save their tires.  Fangio attacked with five successive lap records, time after time carving multi-second chunks off  his previous  best and sweeping past the two Ferraris to victory.   

 

Or, it's 1972, Two or three Trans Am races are chronicled in a single Road & Track piece.  The article  describes  the car-on-car carnage as the orange Mustangs of  Parnelli Jones and George Follmer battered their competition and one another to victory after victory.  There is a picture of Jones  cornering with smoke pouring from beneath his car and whole sections of car pushed in, hanging off and bent out of shape.  The article had a line in it to the effect 'Wise men, seeing orange in their rear-view mirrors, got out of the way'  

 

My retelling of these events is worthless.  The real-time magazine accounts are breathtaking.

The second reason to reread  car magazines is  the enjoyment of favorite writers.  This is purely subjective.   As a card-carrying member of the association of  grey, midwest males, ("AGMM"), I have to start with its patron saint, Peter Egan.  His ROAD & TRACK articles cover  such important issues as road trips to destinations of interest only to AGMM members, the ethical dilemmas posed by replacing inherently defective and unreliable Lucas parts with inherently sound and reliable nonLucas equivalents when restoring 1960-70 British cars, and the truly magical way that small parts permanently disappear when they roll into even the slightest shadow under an AGMM member's work bench.  

 

It's possible that these are not real grabbers if you're  a 25 year old Subaru WRX drifter but we AGMM guys think they're the best!

 

Another key person was  Road & TRACK's  "Editor-at Large"  in the 1960s and 70s - Henry Manney .  His racing reports  always included  a passage along the lines of "Practice was its usual shambles.  The Lotus mechanics were busy placing wagers with the bookmakers, Ferrari was making a big production of loading their cars in trailers in their normal dispute over starting money and Renault was acting terminally French."  He also did a remarkable pair of articles. One reviewed the Paris auto show and the second described the vehicles driven by Parisian ladies of the evening with special driving skills.

 

 Phil Hill did great tests of modern and historic race cars.  When he said something you believed  him because of his keen powers of observation and his communication skills. He was scrupulously careful to never even allude to his personal achievements.  With him, the cars and the racing were the stars and his writing never lost sight of that.    

 

The converse of this, where the reporter is convinced that he is the star, drives me crazy.  Do we really need lines like "My pals recognized the highlight of the concours was when I presented the ____trophy." or a photo caption "Michael Schumacher seeks the author's advice on the fastest way to exit the Schwabenschwancemachendinge at the Nordschleife." Right!!! 

There is hope on this front.  AUTOWEEK has  a writer Natalie Neff. Her picture looks right out of a high school yearbook (or MySpace or Facebook).  She did a wonderful article about driving the Bugatti  Veyron 16.4. in the November 22 issue. She captured how scary it was to be in the driver's seat  It wasn't about how scared she felt but rather about how inherently terrifying  something is when it is capable of moving down a highway at 268 mph at a cost of $2,300,000.  It's an article that will be fun to reread some day.
