Yes, I took a few weeks off from my heavy GGR workload (ha) to enjoy the wines, pastas and delights of driving the Italian autostradas! Ready for high speeds, great views, and really big trucks, then you need a few days on the autostrada! So, they gave me a BMW (I know, I know) but it was a good deal. Only sideswiped once getting on the the highway and couldn’t catch him…I tried but he was too far ahead and the damage was a miniscule hit on my left side mirror as he jumped the queue (that’s how we talk in Italy…also round-a-bouts and Fiat). Live and learn. But them, as we came around a bend in Umbria, there was the most amazing hill top town we’ve come across in a long time – Pitigliano – what a view!
Literally carved from volcanic stone, the town of Pitigliano, located south of Montepulciano, and not too far from the thermal mineral waters of Bagno San Filippo, recreates a three dimensional historic timeline spanning from the Bronze Age to the ravages of World War II. The cliffs of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano have captured and maintained the remains of the many peoples who called the Fiora Valley, and its protective peaks, their homes since 2300 BC.
Porsche in the Desert!
The Baja 1,000 Off-Road Meets Porsche
When Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport Racing loaded his tools, spare parts, and crew and headed to the desert to take on the 51st Baja in his Porsche 911 #89, little did he know he’d use the entire garage!
The Baja Mexican 1,000 off-road race is arguably the toughest desert race in the world. With its huge boulders, big jumps, water crossings, and endless powdery sand beds, about half the cars that enter don’t finish. Put on by the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA), the rally runs from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo.
Fortunately, Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport Racing had all it took to take at the 51st event in his Porsche 911 #89 — just like he had last year. A sister Rothsport Racing Safari 964 #65 named Desert Flyer was driven by Cameron Healy at the same event this past April.
Watch the film “ICARUS” below to see what happens in this year’s desert rally!

Taycan Premiers in the Land of OZ!
Porsche Cars Australia has been showing its all-electric Mission E concept car as part of a brand pop-up display that has just opened in Barangaroo, Sydney. The ‘Future Lab’ allowed visitors to get up close and personal with Porsche’s history and future with a 1962 Porsche 356 on display alongside the Mission E concept. Visitors had the chance to explore the brand’s heritage via an interactive multimedia display and discover the future of Porsche through augmented and virtual reality experiences. The Taycan reaches the land down under in 2020.
IMSA season finale: Porsche wins Petit Le Mans
The Porsche GT Team has won the final round of the 2018 IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship. Patrick Pilet, Nick Tandy and Frédéric Makowiecki won the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta. In the race over ten hours at Braselton, Georgia, Porsche put in a strong performance against tough competition in the GTLM class. Thanks to perfect tactics and a flawless race, the Porsche 911 RSR scored its third win of the season in the North American championship. Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Mathieu Jaminet (France) concluded the last IMSA race of the year in sixth place.
With approximately three hours left on the clock, Makowiecki moved into the lead and defended this position. Tandy then brought the car over the finish line in first place with an advantage of 11.443 seconds.

Refer a Friend
If you have friends who might be interested in Porsche, go to the PCA website and the “Refer a Friend” feature. It’s an excellent way to invite and introduce prospective members to the Porsche Club of America. It is an easy and quick way to follow up after making a personal contact. See the steps below. The great thing about this feature is that ANY member can use it. So, give it a try.
1. Log in to your account.
2. From the Menu Bar, click Membership, Refer a Friend.
3. Under “Refer Friends” enter the email addresses of friends you would like to refer. Separate each email address by a comma.
4. Under “Message” an automatic message will appear. Feel free to make changes. In fact, I would encourage you to personalize your message and direct them not only to the PCA website, but the Membership Benefits page as well (https://www.pca.org/membership-benefits). Whatever message is in the box will be sent to each friend you listed.
GGR Placards
I’ve restocked the cupboard with all new reprints of our placard that feature our new numbers (3400+) and I know you’ll want to hand these out! These are available at every GGR function and we’d like you to pick some up and feel free to use them whenever you see an unaffiliated Porsche sitting idle. I stick them on windshields of Porsches or hand them to drivers if they don’t have our logo in the window. No one is safe from the devious membership director! Porsche owners in Half Moon Bay now run when they see me coming! If you want, I’ll even mail some to you so you can hand them out…let me know and I’ll get them to you!
Badges – I still got em! C’mon…I’ll SEND THEM!
If you failed to pick up your badge at some even, let me know…I’ll send it to you….! C0ntact me at: HMBSHERM@COMCAST.NET
Help! I still have a HUUUGE back-log of badges created from event “no shows.” Please make sure to ask for yours at the next event you attend, we’ll have them set out. Member badges are provided free to all those new members/affiliates who RSVP and attend social and/or driving events for the first time. Otherwise, member badges are available for a small fee through Spotlight Impressions in San Mateo. The badges feature the GGR logo, your name and a convenient magnetic clasp. The cost is $12.00 for the badge plus shipping. So, it behooves you to get them from us during an event. Otherwise, to order your badges fill out the form on our website at www.pca-ggr.org/membership/badges and email back to Spotlight Impressions at sales@spotlightimpressions.com. Make sure to wear your badge to all functions to help interact with 0ther members!
Logo Wear! Get Ready for Winter!
We’ve got a great selection at the GGR- PCA online Webstore with both men and women’s hoodies, sweatshirts, etc. The site features a whole line of wearable GGR plunder. It’s located at www.pcawebstore.com; look for us in the regional section, create an account, and get shopping. If you have a recommendation for some other item, let us know.
Remember to check the calendar for upcoming events. See you at the AX, Track, Fun Run or next social function, e.g., Boxster Brunch?
Enjoy the Fall/Winter!
All the best and Ciao – Capt. Mike
